4 Discreet Signs Of A Toxic Workplace
We are a family
One of my previous employment contracts came with a welcome letter: it said welcome to the XX family. It is easy to think that our workplace is our second home as we spend so much of our waking hours there.
We grow at work, as individuals and also as part of a team. So sometimes, our dynamics at work look similar to our family relationships. Some people have work friends that they are very close with.
But in a work culture focused on productivity and aggressive growth, this comes at a cost. In a context where you are expected to be highly performant and work well with other high performers, this can lead to high expectations.
You will be expected to cover for others or assist in times of need. And in companies where this need is always present, you are joining a vicious circle of constant burn-outs. Family should not do that to you.
Flexible time with no clear boundaries
With the introduction of ‘flexi-time’ in the corporate world, it felt like it was the answer to our prayers. We would be able to schedule time for dealing with personal matters while planning our most productive hours for work.
