4 Reasons Why “Do No Quit” Is Toxic Advice
Above is a picture of a happy goat which quit and doing its own thing.
Do not quit, the most popular self-help mantra out there. It shows grit, resilience and the ability to wait out the storms.
As a coach, I use this phrase a lot. On myself and others.
As humans, we simply give up too early, perhaps we have not build up the grit muscle yet and this is where I come in. But I only push people who want to go there.
In life, ‘Do Not Quit’ type advice is very contextual. It depends on the situation.
Sometimes the fear of being tagged a quitter or a loser make us stay longer than needed.
Do not quit your meal
I had a friend who could not leave the dinner table until her plate was spotless. Combined with other problems in her life, she became an emotional eater. And she has been struggling with weight issues for years.
It is good practice to teach kids not to waste food (Some of us got the there are hungry people in Africa sermon) but this could be bad advice if kids are forced to finish every morsel on the plate. It messes with satiety and appetite.
