Do not join the gig economy if you think there is no barrier to entry
Let’s not get carried away as the real obstacles start after entry
A barrier to entry is an economics and finance term which refers to factors that can block new entrants in the market or an industry.
The gig economy relates to temporary, flexible jobs usually set up on a platform where company tends to hire independent contractors rather than full-time employees. Think platforms like Upwork, fiverr among others.
I am also talking about people who freelance on their own on the internet. Basically, anyone who uses Web 2.0 and more so Web 3.0 to earn money.
The main problem with saying that there is no barrier to entry in the gig economy is exactly that. There is no barrier to entry which makes it the main barrier to entry. Meaning anyone with an internet connection and a phone or laptop can join. Literally anyone.
You can choose to enter and leave without commitments. This makes the gig economy easy to join but difficult to make a name in quickly.
In a full-time job, the barriers to entry might be the qualifications, number of years of experience, residence status.
