I grew up in the era of work hard play hard. By the time I made it to university (college for my fellow americans), the hustle was the journey to the dream life.

By the time I joined the working world, sleepless nights were seen as a badge of honour. Grind till you pass out but do not dare be tired. Because we are going to party like crazy after.

Go to fancy nightclubs, dress to kill, keep the champagne coming. Each order was a further validation to our sleepless but inflated sense of ego.

We worked for successful corporates and we were proud. Almost arrogant: we had stamina of the mightiest and we were making it, big.

We did not care that our health was being harmed, our souls were being deadened with the alcohol and our meaningless lives were being filled with things.

It takes years to awaken. Some never do, some work hard all their lives and play even harder. Work hard to fill the void and playing hard to validate the strenuous working.

The brainwash is simply too deep: to make money, we need to hustle until we die.

But some of us had had enough. We wanted to give back, we wanted to matter to the community, we wanted to make our lives a place of…
