I Spent Years Constructing The Persona Of A Strong, Independent Woman Then I Deconstructed It

I started cringing when people called me independent so I chose interdependence instead

In my life, I have been asked if I am ok a grand total of four times, twice by my mum.

That was before last year. Now I tell people I am not ok and I need help.

Took me 36 years to get there. So before that, people asked me if I was ok once every 9 years.

The world just thought I always was, because that is what could be perceived from outside.

The realisation that you are not alone

Flashback to 2008…I was out with another of my strong, independent women tribe, best friend and ex-colleague. We were out celebrating the end of a work project with teammates.

Suddenly everyone disappeared. ‘Where are they? I asked.

‘Oh they are rescuing Sharon from herself, she got very drunk’ she told me.

‘Oh’ I replied back. I had this sense of deja vu. Because this happened to us a lot. People just assumed these two kiddos would take care of themselves beautifully and should be left to their own device.
