The meaning of life as explained to me by a 20-year-old philosophy student
The weekend of transition between a corporate life and a dogma free (freeish?’) life is emotionally challenging. You go about your day, but nothing looks the same anymore.
People looked different to me. The world started to look more serene, which is funny considering the chaos caused by Lord Omicron.
An appointment led me to a different part of town and an unforeseen snowfall caused me to retreat to a cosy coffee shop. I sat down to work, but I was distracted by the visual of the snowfall through the window. It was beautiful (only when you are inside though!).
A young girl was pacing the coffee shop up and down, as if in deep thought. I looked at her and smiled, I knew those paces all too well.
We crossed eyes briefly, then I asked her: what are you working on? Her blue eyes lit up and she started telling me about this paper she is writing on the meaning of life as inspired by the works of Martin Heidegger. She was anxious, she said, some passages are so hard to understand.
We spoke for more than an hour. If this was me last week, I would have had to cut the…
