On a balmy tropical evening, I was sitting with my glass of wine and watching my then boyfriend operate the barbecue.

We were about to have dinner, a perfect scene or so it seemed.

Indeed, I had a great job with frequent business trips to Paris, loving friends and family, a chance at a fulfilling relationship.

Yet, I had an unknown feeling…which I can now define as unease.

That time before dinner, there was also a deafening silence.

See I had received my invitation to move to Canada. It was decision time and I was in deep thought because he asked me the most terrifying question:

“What do you want?”

I had an obvious answer — Let’s uproot our lives and move to Canada and live happily ever after.

But we all know that is not how life operates.

He loved the tropics, the long periods at sea, the great weather and the evening meat grilling sessions.

I was cornered.

Before sharing the end of this story, I am walking you through my thought process which can help you answer your own: ‘What do you want’.

What you do not want is not an answer
