What I wish I fully understood before getting a college degree

It brings opportunities but the value is circumstantial

Your bachelor’s degree does not need to define your vocation

I myself studied nutrition to finally pursue a career as a coach and writer.

I pursued a bachelor’s in the health sciences as I thought I wanted to become a nutritionist. But it was for the wrong reasons.

So many people treat their degrees as sunk costs and take up jobs in their chosen field as they already invested time and energy in their education. And end up miserable.

It is ok to use transferable skills and knowledge learnt as part of a university degree for a different career path.

I did not realise how it worked in practice until I saw the big accounting firms recruiting Science Majors. I also saw a lot of people in the sciences go into banking or simply quit to pursue other avenues.

You can become massively successful without a degree

We have heard of famous college dropouts such as Mark Zuckerberg who went on to become billionaires. I believe that those are the exceptions rather than the norm.

But not of all of us aspire to become billionaires. But having a college degree does…
